In April 2034, Abby and her father, Jerry, find a pregnant zebra caught in a barbed-wire fence. Owen Moore helps them free it, and they witness the zebra give birth. Owen then informs Jerry that an immune girl named Ellie and a smuggler, Joel Miller, have arrived in Salt Lake City and are at St. Mary's Hospital.

At the hospital, Jerry plans to operate on Ellie to create a cure, knowing the surgery will kill her. Marlene reluctantly agrees to inform Joel. Abby overhears and tells Jerry he's doing the right thing. However, Joel intervenes, killing Jerry and fleeing with Ellie. Abby finds her father dead and is distraught.

In 2038, Abby, surrounded by former Fireflies, corners Joel at the Baldwin lodge. Despite Ellie's pleas, Abby kills Joel with a golf club. Manny attempts to kill Ellie, but Owen intervenes, arguing they should spare her. After a tense confrontation, Abby declares it's over, and Jordan knocks Ellie unconscious.
