Fighters Destiny: Meiling Vs. COM (Arcade Mode) Playthrough [Nintendo 64 - 1998]
Now THIS is a forgotten relic that's been lost in the pages of fighting game history. Fighter's Destiny is a 1998 Fighting game for the N64 made by the company Genki (published by imagineer), & it's still to this day one of the most unique takes on the fighting game I've ever played.
The characters you can play as are... admittedly very basic in design. You have a fair cast of characters from your usual places over the world and they fit the usual fighting stereotypes, including the Japanese karateman [TOTALLY NOT RYU], the Chinese kung fu girl (KINDA SORTA CHUN-LI, though my fave in the cast), a French fighting clown (though he's sorta awesome), the pretty-boy from Spain, the Caucasian Wrestler from USA, the slow but strong "Black" man (from Brazil), the technical, slightly older woman than the Chinese girl (from Germany, my other favorite), the Mongolian snake fighter (...OK, actually THAT guy was sorta unique to fighting games at the time... or at least, how he fought IMO)and of course you cannot forget.. the Japanese Ninja named.... "Ninja" [no, really. I'm serious]. The rest are secret characters (including a actual fighting cow named Ushi... Don't laugh. He'll hand you your ass when you fight him in Rodeo mode.)
Anyways, you pick one that suits your style and you fight it out Virtua Fighter style over a high arena in a more 'proper' take on a fighting tournament. What I mean by that is that you indeed have 'rounds' and you do have health bars to try to wear down, but the match isn't over if you managed to drain your opponent's health to 0. You actually battle to try to get an amount of points needed to win the fight, usually 7, and you get different star amounts depending on how you won the round. The best way to score a lot of points is to knock your opponent completely down to the ground just once, and just draining the opponent's health gauge actually leaves them in a special dazed state (called the Piyori condition) that leaves them very vulnerable, but still on their feet. Any strong move from the opponent will knock you down at this point though... When you're dazed (you can tell when your character turns a shade of purple on top of the dizzy animation), you actually can move a little (no where near as fast as normal) and even if you can't block an attack, you can still jump and duck in a timely manner, so if you're really good at guessing an attack (unless it's a mid or throw, in which case you're boned) you can avoid an attack while mashing your attack buttons to try to replenish your health meter back to an acceptable level, in which case you'll recover and be ready to fight back again.
Another interesting thing about the game is that the main cast (plus it's normal boss, Boro) actually doesn't start with their full moveset out the gate. To get the rest, you'll have to clear a sub-mode with the character called Master Challenge, where you play a game of selecting to fight against the secret boss (appropriately named simply 'Master', old man, wisdom and all) in order to win a max of 8 skills... or if your unlucky, wind up with the risk of losing all your fighting spirit when you are forced to face the OTHER secret boss (also... apporpirately named 'Joker', a tough SOB that basically can amount to being the 'Akuma' of the game with his strong AI, the strongest moves from characters, and strength).
Overall, it's a game that's actually got a fair bit of depth to it (especially for a console that was NOTORIOUS for having a lack of fighting games on it, let alone good ones. Nope, not even Capcom made a fighting game for it (wtf?). Midway's Mortal Kombat series was the biggest name to ever touch it... oh and Killer Instinct Gold...) I still find fun to this day (just like Battle Arena Toshinden) and come back to play every stretch of months or so at a time. It's a shame it never truly took off... though I think it's weak sequel, Fighter's Destiny 2, had something to do with that... I may or may not cover that game at a later time.
For this casual video I take my favorite character from the cast, the Chinese "Quick-style" kung-fu girl, Meiling, through the 10 stages in the standard Vs. COM mode (with slightly altered game rules from the default). Meiling here has all of her 'Master Moves' learned, so I at least try to use them during the playthrough. Once you know how she works... well, I think she can speak for herself.
Meiling: "I'm strong, ya know!"
Game: Fighter's Destiny (Fighting Cup in Japan)
Emulator: Project64k
Character: Meiling (all moves available)
Difficulty: Normal
Stars to win: 8 (7 is the default)
Point Spread: Ringout / Judge[Timeout] (1 star), Throwdowns (2 stars), Knockdowns / Counters (3 stars), Special Finish (4 stars)
(Note: Yeah, I forgot to crop the Frames Per Second display at the bottom of the emulator out of the video attempt, but I don't think it's really getting in the way for this video. When I do Valerie, I'll make an attempt to crop it out.)
